ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG
was the defining force in
Contemporary Art
for
nearly sixty years
, creating a wealth of art (
painting, photography, sculpture, collage, performance, and printmaking
) more varied than that of any artist of the twentieth or twenty-first centuries.
For him, painting entailed not only using a brush, but also
silk-screening, collaging, transferring, and imprinting,
and he did so on the widest array of materials, from
canvas, board and fabric to sheet metal, Plexiglas, plaster and paper
. He has been called a forerunner of virtually every post-war American art movement since
Abstract Expressionism
. Nevertheless, he remained fiercely independent from any particular affiliation throughout his working life.
THE MIXED-MEDIA COLLAGE
This superb, untitled
MIXED-MEDIA
work is made on

BOARD
and features a
COLLAGE
of dripped or splattered
GOUACHE PAINT, GLUE,
and
PAPER
, including several
printed photographic, newspaper and magazine images
.
From the
1960s period images
it is apparent that Rauschenberg is making some kind of
social or political commentary
in his collage.
The fairly-large board measures 13 3/4" x 9 3/4" (35 cm cm x 25 cm), blank on the verso, except for some paint residue (see our very last photo of the verso).
The thick board is slightly under 5 mm in depth, or around 3/16 of an inch. It's a strong wooden panel. Not currently framed.
