About signatures - When an artist scratches their name into the metal etching plate or uses a lithograph crayon to sign their name onto a lithograph plate, the prints that come from those plates are said to be "plate signed". Subject Matter:
The origins of Tallinn date back to the 13th century, when a castle was built there by the crusading knights of the Teutonic Order. It developed as a major center of the Hanseatic League, and its wealth is demonstrated by the opulence of the public buildings (the churches in particular) and the domestic architecture of the merchants' houses, which have survived to a remarkable degree despite the ravages of fire and war in the intervening centuries. Krasnyansky's Earliest Paintings

Inspired by his training in architecture, art history, and restoration. In the stimulating environment of academia, the artists and architects in Kiev and Leningrad commonly exchanged ideas and exhibited insights in painting, drawing, and the history of art and architecture. This hands-on work in art history and design fueled the artist's great admiration for historic buildings and Russia's architectural heritage. However, Krasnyansky's true vocation was art. He created numerous drawings and watercolors between projects and during his travels. Working in the traditional style of European realism, Krasnyansky interpreted the historic architecture of his homeland in an evocative series of watercolor and acrylic paintings. These cityscapes are the hallmarks of Krasnyansky's early artistic style. While the bulk of his output during this period focused on Russian architecture, he also captured beautifully expressive street scenes from Germany, France, and other countries. In each work, he utilizes his architectural eye to show the underappreciated beauty of buildings and remind viewers to never forget the past.
Krasnyansky's cityscapes reveal his deep experience as a draftsman, his brilliance as an architect, and his facile command of the unforgiving technique of watercolor (Park West Gallery).

Artist Biography:
Ukrainian Born American Artist Anatole Krasnyansky (1930- )
Anatole Krasnyansky, now residing in California, was already a prominent architect and watercolorist when he left the U.S.S.R. for the United States in 1975, where he found fertile ground for his aesthetic growth. His traditional cityscapes, much admired in Europe, have grown richer, freer and more expressive. In recent years, he has evolved a second, wholly new style with which to render the experiences and ideas of his new life in the United States. With a Master's Degree in Architecture and Fine Art, he is well-versed in every aspect of the structure and design of the buildings he depicts. Since his arrival in the U.S., Anatole has found important uses for his knowledge of architecture, design and his creative imagination. Working as a scenic artist in television, motion pictures, and the theatre, he has designed sets calling for his specialized background.
Krasnyansky's awareness of the interdependence of architecture, sculpture, painting and applied art along with his knowledge of these diverse disciplines have shaped his work and artistic philosophy. Through experimentation he has developed his own artistic method, one that has freed him from the constraints of traditional watercolor techniques. Krasnyansky's innovative inclusion of paper texture into the creative process is a dynamic component of his art, resulting in an expansion of the medium's potential. He is one of the first artists to elevate the watercolor medium to the expressive possibilities usually associated with oil painting. Bordering on the surreal, Krasnyansky's figures never depart from the recognizable. Altogether new in form, they contain echoes of the artist's Eastern heritage. Humane and lyrical, they combine the tangible with a timeless and universal spirituality.
His artistic output centers on dualities: old and new, history and imagination, structure and surrealism. Through two distinct approaches to his art, Krasnyansky depicts expressive architecture and surreal figures to remind us to never forget the accomplishments of the world's cultures and traditions.
